What the H**L is happening in Athens, Greece?

Over the weekend, more than 45 buildings across Athens were set ablaze by violent protesters. The fires began as the Greek Parliament passed a strict package of austerity measures, in an effort to meet demands by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. The measures, which were prerequisites for a $170 billion bailout, included steep public-sector job cuts and a 20 percent reduction in the minimum wage. More than 80,000 Greeks reportedly demonstrated in the streets of Athens -- among them, a small, violent group that hurled firebombs at riot police and set dozens of fires. More than 120 police and protesters were injured. The next step for the new austerity measures is implementation, and that may face strong opposition as well.

  • This is what happens when citizens become too dependant on an unsustainable government.

  • I agree with QuinnMae and kenzie. This is the end result of giving people a free living and then going broke and cutting them off. It's exactly what we'll see in America (even if they manage to lower the number of retirees from lack of care/services that they were promised) from those who mostly or entirely depend on welfare, FS, WIC, HUD, etc. when the treasury becomes insolvent. We're swirling around that point already, and no amount of new printed money or bailouts will help once our credit rating (and the capability to borrow from other nations) is lost.

The poor in the US, who complain that nothing they get is enough, are going to become very violent and dangerous when they feel they have nothing left to lose. I expect rioting that will make gang violence look like a spat between toddlers by comparison.

What's going on in Greece is pretty much just a sneak preview ... or a movie trailer imo.

  • That's what I was going to say, Quinn. A perfect example of what could happen to America if we continue down the path the current administration is steering us down.

  • Amen farmlady ..some may think nah never in America ..bs yes in America give too much for little to nothing and try to yank it away see what happens. There are too many people out there who are dependent on others instead of themselves. There are alot of people who actually feel they are entitled to being carried by everyone else. This is called GREED.You do not have to be rich to be a greedy assed person. The best thing we can do for our own kids is to teach them how to be self reliant.Teach them of taking pride in their work and earning their own way.Too many today have little to no work ehtic. They think they should be able to give little to nothing of themselves and earn a decent paycheck.Ut oh thats not how the real world works!

  • I just saw the full pictures. That is so very freaking scary! That and the thought that it very may will happen here. I am also very saddened at the fact of all that history is also up in smoke. Places like...

This is the Acropolis of Athens and is nominated to be one of the 7 wonders of modern world.

Well what should one expect when a country's government runs it into the ground, then expects the citizens to pay for it? Hmmmm sound familiar?
