  • Is there a reason why you would even need to? Typically solids aren't introduced until six months to give baby's digestive system to mature a bit. Keep in mind that cereal has no nutritional value, really.

It would probably be best to discuss with your doctor what foods to start with. I've heard some moms here say they started with well mashed banana

  • to be perfectly honest.... my tip would be to hold off for 2 more months. It really is better but if you really want to start now don't use rice. Try mashed avocado mixed with breast milk/ formula or a whole grain cereal.

  • I agree with Brawnwyn, starting solids this early isn't generally recommended and not really necessary usually. If your doctor is recommending it for a medical reason then they should have some suggestions for you.

Only tip I can give you is start with one food and don't move on to a new one for a while.

  • normally you start with the same thing for 3 days in a row, bananas 3 days, the next thing 3 days etc etc to watch out for allergies , vegies and fruit, good first veg are pumpkin or peas, green beans. It is early to be starting on solids though, but everyone does things differently.

  • My doctor didn't have me start solid food until 6 months. When I did start it was just rice cereal. I only added a new food once a week to see if there were going to be any food allergies.

  • Don't!

Solids fed to babies before they turn 1 are for the experience of eating them, not for nutrition (a subject most doctors know little about).Nutritionists recommend starting solids at 6 months; many now recommend skipping cereal and starting with a bit of avocado mashed with breastmilk (or formula). Then baked sweet potato, oatmeal, pumpkin, pureed peas, etc. Jarred baby food tastes awful, is expensive, and you never really know what is in it. Be sure to avoid the allergy trigger foods. This is not a complete list: before age 1, no soy, dairy, wheat, citrus, egg white, strawberries; before age 2 no honey, chocolate, nuts.
Two great books /websites on feeding babies, with differing philosophies, Baby Led Weaning www.babyledweaning.com and Super Baby Food www.superbabyfood.com You should be able to find them at your local library
