What things did you learn in school that they don't teach any more and wished they did.

They aren't teaching cursive writing and typing. I wish they still did. My daughter is ok with the keyboard but my son isn't as adept as she is. And if they aren't going to teach cursive how is the next generation going to sign formal documents or checks.

  • How to write a complete sentence and to use proper English. Research with books/encyclopedia. On the grammar side, how to format a proper letter and different kinds, how to format a paragraph. How to study properly, how to pick out main ideas and such when they read. To think critically and creatively. Proper exercise and nutrition. There are elementary schools in my district that no longer have recess and have gym 1 time a week.

  • I agree that cursive is a dying art and needs to be taught. DS will be learning it even if they don't teach it in school, though I am pretty sure they still teach it here. He started learning it last year in PreK at private school, but I think the public school starts at 3rd grade.

  • Well along with all the above, they taught us that not everyone made the team, how to mind our manners and how to use them, how to have respect for teachers and other students, that there were repercussions to our actions, including punishment.    I know it was a whole different world back then, but these are still things I taught to my own children.

  • Roman Numerals, I don't even know them and they are a part of the HESI nursing exam I have to take so I have to learn them. At the very least the kids would be able to know which Super Bowl it is...LOL.

  • Critical thinking. Our current educational system trains our kids to be nothing more than robots.

  • It depends on your school district. Our school still teaches cursive writing - it's part of the 3rd grade curriculum and it carries through into 4th. My DS brings home worksheets on letter formation and handwriting almost daily. They also have "tech" once a week which focuses on everything from keyboarding to using basic programs like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc and searching the Internet.

I do wish they'd focus a little more on how to research off-line. The classes will go the library to look for books, but the vast majority of their research work comes from the web.
