I was talking to a friend of mine on the internet earlier and this was the story she told...
She was driving down the street through a residential neighborhood when, out of nowhere a large dog attacked her car. She slammed on breaks but accidentally struck the dog. She jumped out of the car to see about the dog, who was injured but seemed alright. Just behind the dog, however, she could saw something that made her heart stop. In the middle of the street, in the direct path of her car, was a 18 month old little girl, who had tripped and fallen in the middle of the road. Her frantic mother was just behind her. The young mother, holding her crying child, told her that the child was playing in the yard, while she watched and she decided to chase her ball into the road and the dog followed her and she tripped over her shoelace. The mother was running towards her child when her car came around the corner, and it was obvious that she didn't see the child and wouldn't going to stop in time, the mother was so frightened that she couldn't even scream. The dog, however, placed herself between the car and the baby and lunged.
The dog's back leg was broken but the vet said that she would make a full recovery. Other then a skinned knee, the child was unharmed. Her parent's are very grateful to the brave dog that risked her life, without hesitation, to save their child.
It's amazing how, without us even realizing it, these animals become so devoted to our children.
Comment if you have a dog that would do the same for your child. I know mine would.
My dog saved my life when I was 3. I wondered away from my house into the woods and got lost. I was missing for several hours and my dog stayed by my side to keep me warm until I fell asleep. While I was sleeping the dog led the rescuers to me. The temp dropped into the low 20's that night and all I had on was jeans and a t-shirt. If I had stayed all night I'd have frozen to death.
When my daughter was 8 months old we adopted an 8 year old aussie. Nick was a Mama's boy but he looked out for Kylie. On Walks, Kylie would walk him when she was a little older and he would stay at her side. If they got to far ahead of me (which really was not all that far) he would stop and wait for me. Kylie could not get him to budge until I was closer. He was never trained for this but he could detect when I was going to have a seizure. He was only with us for 4 years but there is no doubt in my mind he would have done whatever he could to protect either of us.
My oldest dog who happened to be live with Nick put herself between us and a Bull that wandered into our campsite about 4 years ago. This is a dog I would never have thought would have done something so brave as big a scaredy cat that she is but she stood her ground even when this Bull charged.
