Do you think your kids personalities are a reflection of you and how you are at that particular point in your life?

I hope I explained this well. When my son was born & was an infant, I rested a lot with him, snuggled on the couch with him & mostly watch Jewelry TV, LOL! He liked to watch the turntables go around. He is a calm & relaxed type of kid & very well adjusted. Well, now I have a baby Daughter & I NEVER SIT when she is awake! I just am constantly buzzing around doing this & that & running after my Son (5) & cleaning up etc. She sees this daily. She will not rest on the couch, she hates the TV, she just wants to be in constant motion when she's awake. Like me carrying her around or being in her exersaucer. She doesn't even sit still on the floor. She rolls around like a mad woman! LOL! What do you think about your kids?

  • I think how you are can affect your child somewhat, but I think their basic personality is set when they are born. I have 5 and they're all very different, but have been different from the moment they were born. My 2nd and 3rd are only 18 months apart and had the same basic "routine" as babies - because my oldest has autism and I was always running around after him! - and they are like night and day! One is calm and easygoing (ds) and the other is all drama and mayhem (dd)

  • I only have one son, so I dont have much of a comparison. But my DS is very cautious and reserved, especially for a boy of 9, and I was definitely that way when he was little. I myself am much more of a wild risk-taker than my son will ever be, and I find it frustrating at times.

  • No, I don't think so. My oldest DD was a "firecracker" even in the womb. At every U/S I heard something along the lines of "your baby is very active". I was less stressed after she was born. Now, I'm a stressed out divorced mom trying to make it in this economy & thankfully my younger DD is more go with the flow.

  • I agree with missanc and 3libras. Environment can influence but it's not the determining factor.

I have never been a hovering, nervous mom. I have always defaulted to nonchalant or tempered reactions. DS, however, is very sensitive and always has been. I have also always taken the approach that life presents shades of grey. DS is completely very black-and-white in his outlook. DD, on the other hand, tends to go with the flow. They have many similarities - and many of those overlap with DH and/or me. They have many differences - some reflect me. some reflect DH. Some are totally unique.

    it's simply who they are.

  • My kids are night and day and my parenting hasnt changed. My daughter was a very content baby, calm and relaxed. Loved playing by herself and would stay in one spot for long periods of time. What I mean by that is, we could put her in her swing or play pen and she would just coo and talk and play or fall asleep. My son is very demanding and hates to be in one spot for more than 10 -15 minutes. Unlessof course he is being carried or pushed in a stroller. He likes to be mobile. Its so hard for me to anything when he's awake because I cant set him down for more than a few minutes at a time. Cleaning the house would take me 2 hours tops and now its an all day process lol. Laundry takes days lol. My daughter is 4 now and still very independant. My son is almost 7 months and showing no sign of being independant at all.
