New Report: Muslim Terrorism a ‘Minuscule Threat’

The main summary of the new UNC report analyzing terrorism, crime and the demographics behind it:

• Only one Muslim individual carried out a terrorism-related activity in the U.S. in 2011. The attack did not result in any fatalities.

• 20 individuals stand accused of terrorism-related activity, although it is unclear how many individuals overall in the U.S. are accused of terrorism-related crimes. Previous FBI data shows that Muslims usually make up 6% of domestic activity.

• Muslims were involved in disrupting many of these plots, working with law enforcement.

• Approximately 40% of those accused are converts to Islam.

• At least one attack was a Muslim targeting a mosque, confining his victims to other Muslims.

• In the decade from 2001-2011, approximately 200 American Muslims have been charged with terrorism-related activities. This number includes those who committed acts of terrorism overseas in places like Somalia and Yemen. Even if we take the conservative number of 2 million Muslims in the U.S., that means 0.01% of Muslims are involved in terrorism-related activity over the span of a decade. Per annum, it is 0.001%. If we take a more realistic number of 4 million American Muslims, the numbers become 0.005% over a decade, or 0.0005% per year. Last year there were 14,000 homicides in the U.S., and with a population of 300,000,000, that’s about 0.0005% of the population are murderers.

The report ends with this sage advice: “This study’s findings challenge Americans to be vigilant against the threat of homegrown terrorism while maintaining a responsible sense of proportion.”

This article also has a link to last year's report for comparison.

For those worried about the "evils of Islam", how do you reconcile that fear with the actual data?

  • I'm not saying I have a FEAR of them.... BUT I will say that data will be released to put the masses at ease, to make people all warm and fuzzy inside. Then, when we are all calm with our guard down another 9-11 will come along. There is always a threat of terrorism, we are not a liked nation, I don't care what these "facts" state.

  • I'm not any more afraid of Muslims than I am Christians, Pagans, or people of the Jewish faith. I'm aware that there are a select few of them out there that may do me harm, but that has nothing to do with their faith and everything to do with a defect in their person. The same goes for any murders, child molesters, and rapists.

9/11 could just as easily have been extremists of a different faith.

  • I am not more concerned about one group as a terrorist group over another. However groups that love us don't usually have the atmosphere that would breed those hostile to the US. So you naturally look at those who are hostile now or in the recent past. You also look at those who would have a lot to gain by disrupting the government and/or the economics of the country. You also look at those who philosophy of life is diametrically opposed to your own. These are the people most likely to be terrorists. And yes we breed our own. You also look at those recently converted to one of the above mentioned groups because like any convert they are generally more zealous.

  • I have never considered the threat to be "Muslims" as much as a threat from terrorist who happen to identified themselves under a specific religious umbrella. In other words, the threat wasn't Islam. The threat was Al Qaeda and those sympathetic to them.

Is that the only threat? No. Is it still a valid threat? Yes. Does that mean I fear Muslims? no. I am mature enough and jaded enough to realize that evil comes in many guises and rarely reflects the true nature of the group it opts to identify with at the moment.

This ~ followed up with anything coming out of the 'gubmint' as a "don't worry, we're on it" report is pretty much trash imo. Doesn't matter if the topic is terrorism, the food pyramid, or what new pills are safe ... just ignore that flu-like illness it gave you. It's all suspect to me, moreso if someone is making money on the report/findings.
