Are they the same thing? NEED ANSWERS QUICK PLS!

Shortening and Lard? I want to make cupcakes but I dont know if Lard and shortening are the same thing? Where would I find shortening in the grocery store?

  • Shortening and lard aren't the same thing. Lard comes from animals, shortening comes from vegetable oil. For cupcakes I'd stick with Crisco.

  • lard is animal fat while crisco is a vegetable product.

    Lard is basically the same as straining the grease from cooking a bunch of bacon into a large tub and using it to cook with.

    some shortening contains lard,but some are vegetable oil based
    its in the baking section

  • crisco shortening is in a little blue can, usually on the baking aisle, next to vegetable oils/etc.

  • When I was a child most people cooked with LARD. It's rarely used nowadays. Most everyone uses vegetable oil or crisco.

  • Lard is rendered pig fat and shortening is Crisco. If you are baking use Crisco.
