How old?

How old was your child the first time you let sleep over at a friends. I know that time is going creep up on me soon so I'm wanting to get some suggestions.

  • My Son hasn't had a sleep over at a friends yet, he's only 5. But I have to say that in order for me to allow it in the future, I would have to know the family VERY VERY well & for a while. It is different today from when I grew up in the 70's. I always slept at different friends homes starting around 9 years old. It was a small town & everyone knew everything about everyone else & my Dad had a business where most of my friends parents were customers. Everyone was family. Today we live in a larger suburban area where no one knows anyone closely.

  • My daughter was not night trained until the middle of 6th grade. She really wanted to go to sleep away camp that summer and finally got trained. After that she started having sleep overs in 7th grade.

My son did it earlier in 5th grade. But he was only 3 houses down the block at a friends house.

  • My dd spent the night at 7, my ds was 8. But we weren't really in a stable place until my daughter was 7 and my son 8 - her dad and I separated when she was 4 and he was 5 and were in a townhouse in an area with few kids.

  • My DD had her first night away at one of my friend's houses (our pediatrician) at 1 week old. She has stayed the night away at my BFF's house with their kids many many times since she was a year old and she is 3 1/2. She loves spending the night away and has a great time. It will be quite some time before she gets to do it again b/c they moved out of state last week.
