Can we apply this thought in our lives?

i can, as a mother, a wife, a daughter, a friend, and as a human. although, those who don't believe in God will not agree with the 'serving God' part of the quote.

Of course we can, but as dullscissors said, many women will object to the "serving G-d" part. I don't know if they find the "serving" or the "G-d" more insulting, though. Lol

I'd hope that no one would be insulted, per se, by either. I think that even if there isn't a belief in a higher power the thought is a very valid one.

Who couldn't use more compassion in their lives, both giving and receiving? :D

I believe it is something that can be found to be meaningful, even without the idea of God attached. One could replace the idea of God with the idea of a greater good or a higher way or something to that effect, though, and still find a lot of meaning.
