if the family feels that way, sure. if there are no 'hard' feelings, and they are civil, for their daughter's sake he needs to be there.

I would think that if the family didn't want him there, then they have their reasons. It's ultimately up for them to decide. That would be like having my ex at my funeral... If my son wanted him there, then ok I guess. I would be dead so what does it matter. I know that sounds harsh, but it's the truth. The family are the ones with the final say as to who would be there.
