School takes child’s sack lunch saying it was unhealthy

A North Carolina school is under fire after a state health inspector allegedly made a child eat a school lunch of chicken nuggets instead of her sack lunch because hers didn’t meet state health guidelines.

The girls grandmother says the sack lunch consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich on white bread, potato chips, a banana and apple juice.

A school spokesperson says while the lunch was healthy, it was missing milk, a key part of what is considered to be a healthy meal. The spokesperson went on to say that the inspector should have simply offered the child milk instead of a replacement meal, but says its part of policy to make sure children have healthy food options.

  • If I sent a sack lunch with my child and a school staff member tried to take it from her for any reason and especially because they thought it was 'unhealthy' i think i'd be on the phone to a lawyer to sue their ass as soon as i found out. YES the schools have a responsibility to provide healthy meals for our children but it is ultimately up to the PARENT of that child to decide what he/she will eat, or if the kid is old enough to decide for themselves. What if that kid was allergic to milk? or maybe they already have milk for breakfast and dinner and the mom just wanted to give them a treat for lunch by putting apple juice instead... or as most likely the reason her sack lunch probably wasn't refrigerated and if the mom had sent milk it would have spoiled by lunch time! UGH, i'd be PISSED at that school!

  • I would have been wicked pissed. How do they know whether or not my child has a milk allergy or lactose intolerance? I pack my child's lunch based on what I know my child will/will not eat. If I choose to treat my child with potato chips, I most certainly will. In my opinion, that inspector WAAAAAYYY overstepped his bounds and they would have heard my wrath all the way to California!

The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the person who was inspecting all lunch boxes in the More at Four classroom that day.

The Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs - including in-home day care centers - to meet USDA guidelines. That means lunches must consist of one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home.

  • If I sent that lunch I would be SO SO pissed off!! If my kids ate that I'd be pleased!!! My DD won't even eat meat most of the time... so I don't even send it. I would be so far up the schools ass after that they would not know where I stopped & they began!! WTF!!!!

  • That's crazy.. I make my daughter's lunch to avoid eating school crap.. it usually consists of half a turkey sandwich, crackers, a go-gurt, a cutie, and juice. NO MILK....

If they were so concerned about only milk being missing, why didn't they let her eat her lunch while giving her a school milk?

    Ridiculous!
