Horses

there are so many breeds of horses... how do i know which one to choose? Sometime in the future, after getting used to horses (we only rode a horse once and we loved it), we want to own a horse. I preferably want a black one. im 4'11'' so i need a horse that is the right size for me. other than that, i dont know how to choose one.

  • Spend more time working with horses before settling on a breed. Take lessons several times a week. Work with a trainer. Try different disciplines. Work with a variety of horses with a variety of temperaments. Learn how to identify and correct behavioral problems.

Lease a horse for 6-12 months. Be present at all vet and farrier appointments. Clean tack. Muck stalls. Realize that riding is only a fraction of what you do when you own a horse.

I don't mean to sound like a snob, but there are a looooooooot of things to experience and think about before getting a horse. Focus on becoming a capable horseman for a few years, first.

As for size, it depends. My 5'2" friend rides a 16.3hh Thoroughbred, whereas I'm 5'8" and ride a 14.0hh Fjord.
