My 18 month old DS has 104 fever! Home remedies please

He started having fever since last night. Called my doctor and she told me to give him baby ibuprofen. It kept fluctuating all throughout the night. Would come down to 98-99 and then after an hour or two would go upto 102. In the morning it got alot better, but then in the afternoon it went to 103 again. I took him to ER. Doctor said he doesn't has chest congestion or runny nose, no ear infection either. She said it was viral and put him on antibiotics (every 8 hours) plus fever reducer which I was already giving him every 6 hours.

After I came back from the hospital (at around 4pm) I gave him his meds and put him to sleep. He woke up at 6pm with his fever going upto 104!!! He's wearing onsie and a cotton bottom. No socks. Putting cold packs too. Called the doctor again and they said not to worry just continue with his meds, he'll be fine. What else should I do? He's totally burned out! Never seen him like this! I feel so helpless, what else should I do?

P.s. I live in USA but I'm visiting my family these days in south Asia. That should clear the confusion about the time

  • I would bring him back to the ER now. He must have picked up something over there that he has no immunuty to. Also, I would call his regular Pediatrician ASAP & talk to them & see what they say. Maybe your Pediatrician can speak to the Pediatrician on duty at the ER where you are when you get there. GL!

  • Antibiotics for a virus,SMH
I know it sucks, but just keep an eye on him and push the fluids. Don't do the ice packs. The body's natural reaction to cold is to increase the body temperature

  • Put him in a bath with a temperature of 98 deg. The water will feel cold to him but it will suck the heat out of his body. You can also wrap him in warm wet towels. You don't want ice cold and any temp close to normal body temp with help suck out the heat. You can give ibuprofen avery 4 hours if needed. I also found that if I used the ibuprofen suppositories they worked better and longer. Just watch that he doesn't spike with fever very high and very fast because he could end up having fibrial seizures (high fever induced seizures).

  • Lukewarm or cool bath....alternate Tylenol and motrin every 4 hrs and stay on top of it....and antibiotics for a virus will do absolutely nothing except kill off his good bacteria....that's why I don't like quick care or ER docs...they do the same with everyone...keep cold compresses on his forehead and wipe his hands and feet with cool cloth.

  • This is why we have antibiotic resistance. He shouldn't be on them for a viral infection.

Keep him in light clothing, keep pushing the fluids. Don't use ice packs. A lukewarm bath will likely make him more comfortable. Just try to prevent him from getting chilled. Try alternating between Tylenol and Advil for his fever. If you are unable to get it below 101 with fever reducers please take him back in.

  • Omg antibiotics cant get rid of a virus, it has to b some sort of infection for an antibiotic. I hv been there numerouse times and u keep going bck 2 the doc untill u get answers. When r son was only 2 the ped kep sending us hm week after week telling us he had fever due to a virus. 1 night he started throwing up all his tylenol and was running 105.6 temp! We grabed him and rushed to the hospital. We were there till the nxt morning when chest xrays came bck and he had phnemonia. He was put on breathing treatment, antibiotics and we used saline 2 help clear his nose and throat. So we got a new ped and hes the best and takes care of r kids. Use your mothers nstinct and dont give up untill u get answers. Gl sweetie, hope your baby starts feeling better soon.

  • YES PLEASE DO NOT USE ICE PACKS ON HIM OR NETHING THAT WOULD SHOCK HIS BODY, THAT COULD MAKE HIM EVEN SICKER. Use a cool rag to put ovr his forehead but thats it and keep him lightly clothed.
