why does MLK have jan 19th?

he was born jan 15th 1929 and died april 4th 1968
why is his "day " the 19th?
im just wondering i dont get it
these are actul things that happened jan 19th
Edgar Allan Poe was born (1809)
Georgia seceded from the union (1861)
Robert E. Lee was born (1807)
the first presidental news conference filmed for tv with permission of president Eisenhower (1955)
is there a reason this day has been made his "day" i dont understand

  • They made it the Monday so it would always be a holilday. They made it a Monday because holidays in the middle of the work week are harder on businesses than holidays that simply make longer weekends. It's also the reason that President's day (celebrating Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays) is on a Monday instead of either of their birthdays.

  • It's not that Jan. 19th is his day, it is the Monday after his birthday. It changes every year.
