Day 6 in the NICU

While little zoe is doing amazing she just gets very tired eating. I'm going crazy my depression is at it's all time low. My other two kids aren't aloud up to the hospital because of flu season so I hardly get to see them but I don't wanna leave Zoe's side the nurses will say one thing then I have a different nurse tell me something very different. This is my second time in the NICU so you think i'd be more used to it. What are some things I can do to calm my depression. I sit in my room and cry all day (their letting me board here with her) the only time I pull myself together is when I go down for her cares. I really need advice on how to get this postpartum under control.

  • You need to talk to a nurse so they can get in contact with your OB. They should be able to help you out. :0) Don't worry! I can't imagine the amount of stress you are having to deal with on top of everything else! Just talk to them.

  • You need to talk to your ob about this. It is so hard having your baby in the NICU and mot being able to do that much, and knowing the older siblings can't visit. I had my preemie three days before Christmas and I stayed there until the nurses told me flat out I needed to spend the holiday with my family, they would take good care of Anah. It was hard, but it was good for me and for our (then) two year old. She also was not allowed in due to flu season. Talk with your doctors, get a timeline maybe on when they think you can do more with Zoe. Anah had the same issue, got very tired with sucking and her sats and resp would set off alarms. Hang in there, Anah came home at ten days old, and did great :)

  • My DD spent 6 weeks in the NICU (she was born 3 months early) ... it was the absolutely most stressful time in my life BUT my husband was so supportive (I don't normally say that about him) and the doctors and nurses were fantastic ... talked to me, answered all my questions, explained procedures, etc. My DD was also diagnosed w/PVL while in the NICU and as scary as it was, researching the topic answered a ton of questions we had and gave us a little sense of control over the situation (well, a sense of control over our reaction to the situation). Every thing turned out great ... she's a straight-A, talented, overly perfectionistic 6th grader who isn't afraid to try anything and already knows where she wants to go to college!

I personally wouldn't jump to "depression" that needs to be medicated. You are going through a lot and it's normal to have those feelings. I did too, but they subsided in time. Good luck.

  • well let the nurses know how you feel, or to one you can trust. also youtube it and you'll see the activity in your brain that's making you feel this way. When I was depressed and realized it's just chemicals in my brain making me feel this way, I somehow had a spark of hope. It felt like it was never going to go away, like I was going to be this depressed, anti social person, but I got myself a psychiatrist and it really helped. Control your brain, don't let those tiny little neurotransmitters control you!!!
