What would you think?...my dds 1st grade teacher told her they come from a shell

not sure why she told the kids this, but today she asks me why I am making dinner how we got here. I wasn't really paying attention although I did hear her (so I didn't answer) so then she goes I know how we got here. I asked her how? She says we came from a shell. I started laughing I was like we came from a shell? She said ya. She said that 3 people are in the shell she said the girl then there is a boy then the baby is in the middle. I asked her who told her that? She said her teacher told her. Not sure if this is ok or no because it is wrong information or what. What are your thoughts?

  • sometimes kids get things confused or turned around. I would casually ask the teacher what this is about, sometimes it could be really funny.

  • I'd speak to the teacher and ask her what's up then go from there.

  • we talked about it again yesterday as to why she said this and she said something about them reading a book and the teacher said that they were in the shell naked

  • I guess I wouldn't know what to think. I can't quite tell what was said or conveyed, or what was being explained. And no sense of context. Just not clear to me at all. I probably would have started by exploring what my daughter seemed to think, and try to learn the context (what they were talking about.) You might ask the teacher what the "shell" your daughter mentioned was about.

  • Funny - the way you describe it above, I actually first thought that maybe the teacher was just reading a fictional story and your daughter misunderstood (can't you just see the cute pictures in that book?) Regardless, it sounds like there is a chance your daugher didn't understand what the teacher meant, so I'd just ask her. Not angry, just curious. And then go from there.

  • I'd just ask the teacher if that is, in fact, what she said. Sometimes kids mishear or misunderstand and then sort of just fill in the blanks. Alternately, this really sounds like something one child says to another when describing how babies come into being.

So, it'd be good to get the straight scoop lol

  • I would question the teacher. I would need to know exactly what was discussed so I could decide how to 'correct' the misinformation. Or at least clear up the misinterpretation

  • Depends on your dd's level of understanding. My bet is that her teacher was trying to avoid a conflict with you by sugar coating what really happens.
