Should I keep my newborn away from my friend's unvaccinated 2 year old?

My son is 3 months an is not done with his vaccinations. My friend's son is 2, is not vaccinated and has had whooping cough. Should I continue our play dates with my 2 year old when the baby is older or I am being over-protective?

  • Honestly, I'd stay away. I haven't done research, but if the kid had whooping cough, I wouldn't chance it.

  • You're being over protective if the child is healthy when you visit.

  • I dont think you are being over protective at all. I wouldn't take the chance. Wait until your baby has had vaccinations. You would never forgive yourself if something happened.

  • At 3 months old vaccinated or not you should not be exposing the child to whooping cough. Whooping cough can cause serious problems under the age of about 12 months, after that most child should be fine.

As far as the friends child not being vaccinated you would be surprised how many older children who are vaccinated get whooping cough so that should have nothing to do with your decision.

  • No, keep him away!! Whooping cough is serious and can especially kill a baby. Be safe and keep him home.

  • If the 2 year old is over the sickness (no cough or fever) then its ok. If he still has symptoms then , be safe and don't bring the baby around yet. Whooping cough is caused by a virus and therefore is not contagious after it has run its course.

  • If her child is sick then you shouldn't be around the child regardless of weather they have been vaccinated. Once the child is better you can go around them again. Not letting your child around hers just because she isn't vaccinateing is being over protective.
