Adult tooth coming in behind milk teeth, what is your experience?

This morning my daughter (4.5 years, 5 in May and was an early teether) showed us she has a permanent tooth coming up behind her baby teeth. I set up an appointment with the dentist for tomorrow at 11:30 am and have started researching the subject. From what I've seen, most cases resolve on their own without intervention (preferred). What did you do?

  • My son will have to have his baby teeth pulled. He is now up to the third adult tooth coming up behind his baby teeth, and his baby teeth still aren't loosening. Brushing his teeth has become a nightmare because I just can't get that area clean enough and food constantly is trapped in there. They will be pulled on the 21st. : (

  • I was thisclose to taking my granddaughter in to have a couple pulled because of this situation. However, the situation did resolve itself. The baby teeth became loose, 3 at the same time, and she was able to pull them.

  • My daughter's first tooth fell out last week, and she had her adult tooth growing in right behind. I've noticed the adult tooth is already moving up front to where it should be.

  • I must say that I am quite annoyed with the fact that I will not get cute pictures of my son with gaps in his teeth because he is missing some. The adult teeth are already as big as the baby teeth. I know it shouldn't be that huge of a deal, but I really wanted those pictures.

  • It really depends on the situation and how and where the tooth is coming in. The dentist will help evaluate the situation. And if you aren't comfortable with the advice you receive, get a second opinion.

I had adult teeth coming in behind my eye teeth and molars. I had to have them extracted. My DD had the same with her top eye teeth and also had to have them extracted because they wouldn't leave. Luckily the teeth were on top so there was no damage to the front of the teeth, and they didn't come in enough until the other teeth were out, so no back damage either.

  • My daughter had what we fondly called "shark teeth" when she lost her first two. :) Her bottom two center teeth were loose but not out at the same time her new permanent teeth were pushing their way in behind the baby teeth. We had a regular check-up at the dentist already scheduled around the same time. At that appointment we were told that it is no big deal on the bottom and the first set of teeth would eventually fall out on their own. (They did. The first came out a day or two after that visit and the 2nd was within a week of that.) However, the dentist told us that if we saw the new top teeth coming in behind the original set (and the originals weren't showing signs of popping out) we were to come in and have the baby teeth pulled. The dentist said it's rare to see the new set erupt behind the old on the top but if it happens those old teeth must be removed to make room for the new to come in properly.
