Military wives, what do you say to angry people who question the value of a hero?

What do you say when people finally open up with their anger and ask "What does Iraq and Afghanistan has to do with freedom, if the issue was about oil in the first place?"

What would you say if an angry civilian asks you if you would be just as satisfied with the military if it had paralleled the costs and hardships of civilian lives? Meaning no BAQ to cover housing, no more TRI-care for family medical, and no more AAFES shopping, that you must completely live from economyjoke the rest of us?

Would the military mean the same to you?

Yes, there is a tone of jealousy. But then again, there's a population of us to consider, military POV (personal owned vehicles) are being vandalized.

  • UMMM, Tricare, BAH, and BAQ are part of the militarys pay, it's a benefit for the job, just like any job has certain perks (honestly, though, when you look at the big picture it's not all that great of a perk considering the hours they work on salary not hourly pay). You are really trying to compare apples to oranges. If you look at most of the military jobs, you would see that the military gets paid pretty equal or LESS then if they held that same job as a civilian (this includes all the "extra" they get).

Bottom line, the Military is a job that someone choose to do instead of a different job. Honestly, if you look at the hours that military members work, even with all the benefits, they really don't get paid a whole lot.

  • "Civilians are being uprooted, losses jobs and foreclosure."

That has nothing to do with the military. That has to do with capitalism, businesses unwilling to hire and a multitude of other non-military issues.

So, OP, what would happen if tomorrow the military disbanded and all those thousands of soldiers flooded the job market?

Join the fucking military and walk a mile in their shoes, then have the gonads to ask that question. Is what I would say.

  • I've never encountered that and it would probably piss me off. Let the haters experience uprooting their families every couple of years, always have to start new, difficulty in decent jobs, having to reticle their cars, register to vote, etc. let them know what it's like to spend a year away from their spouse and have virtually no social net to fall back on because family is usually on the other side of the country...let them be jealous of our often sub standard health care. The NEX or commissary is not all that. It's great living barely above poverty until your husband hits a certain rank.

Again, I'm glad nobody has said that to me but I don't flaunt my dependent ID card around like a golden ticket. Is my husband a hero? Not really. He'd be the first to say he's a petty officer first class and he's just doing a job.

  • I would also like to mention that the stability that there was in the military is no longer there. They are downsizing, what use to be a minor infraction 2 years ago will get you kicked out now.

  • Did someone say this to you then? I can't tell if you're coming at this from a military spouse perspective or a civilian perspective.
