I feel like a horrible mom!!

My son is one. He is completely healthy. He is really good and active and should sleep all night long, but don't. Well sometimes, last night he did. But like tonight and so many nights he wakes up just screaming really loud for like five minutes sometimes longer!! But I've really been paying attention lately because he has been doing it for awhile, and most of the time he don't open his eyes. I try calming him down, but it don't do anything... Someone help I feel like a horrible mom!!! Is it my fault or anyone else go through this??

  • You're not a bad mom!! It sounds like night terrors. You have to kinda study the difference between a bad dream or nightmare and a night terror. With a bad dream, it is okay, and good, to move in to try to sooth your child. However, with a night terror, I've read that it isn't good to move in and even try to wake your toddler- it can scare them more. It sounds hard, but you have to let it 'run it's course.' I would look up some information on night terrors and even ask your pediatrician so you can be better prepared and know what should and shouldn't be done in that situation. Now, you mentioned that it is often your toddler wakes and screams- now I have no idea if night terrors can be THAT common to happen that often?? I would ask your pediatrician for advice.

  • Some people, kids or not, just don't sleep through the night.

Would you, if you weren't waking up to the sound of your son every night?

My son just turned 4, and he wakes up at least once. I'm obviously a grown up and I wake up at least twice every night.

  • Everyone always complains at me that he don't sleep all night... Constantly someones on my back about it.. A few months ago something bad happened to me and my son was in the next room but asleep. And my mom says that's why he don't sleep all night and it's my fault! It wasn't nothing where he would've known any way, no loud noises or anything.

  • They grow out of them. The ONLY bad mom is the one who beats her child. You haven't been doing that, right? Then not a bad mom. PERIOD.

Sleep all night long? Who told you that silly lie? **grin** Mine is 12 YEARS old and has never slept all night long except when ill. Takes after his mother.. I've done the same for 48 years! Neither of us prone to waking up screaming, though my son's been known to have nosebleeds that look like something from a Wes Craven movie!

  • I guess I never thought they could get them so young, but yes I get them still to sometimes. I'll ask his doctor this week.

  • Some kids do, some don't. I still have them occasionally, they do get easier to deal with as you get older. My son grew out of them and hasn't had one in years.

Not saying that is definitely what it is, that is just my best guess. If it really concerns you talk to your doctor about it and see what he has to say.

  • You aren't a bad mom. It might be night terrors. You didn't cause them and a lot of kids go through it.
