Working under the table
Other than hiring a private investigator, is there any way to find out if someone is working under the table? Has anyone hired a private investigator? How much did they charge?

OP, I'm really not sure if there would be any other way, except via some sort of private investigator. If this is for child support I support you could report the person, along with their suspected employer, to the state?

Why do you care if they get caught it's their problem? --
actually, its not just 'their problem'..anyone who is self-employed knows the high cost of SE tax is partially due to so many who cheat. idk what the reason..if i knew it was happening, i'd report them.

Yes - my ex is claiming he can't work and has gotten a dr to go along with it (he had a heart attack in 2006 and has been working on getting disability since, they keep denying it), but he can't live on nothing - so I know there's money coming in, but the courts say I have to prove it!

So he's getting off child support, yet he buys the kids stuff, takes them on vaca, etc. I did get one of the hotels to send me a receipt of his stay, so I can prove he's spending money, but for now that's all I can prove. I don't know his employer, I have no idea, just my suspicions due to his cancelling so many appointments during weektime hours, never requesting vacation when the kids have teacher workdays during the week - and he's getting money from somewhere.

I dont know about your state but in Ohio if the ex receives disability the custodial parent gets no child support. I also think many child support agencies have their own investigators so if you can say he works for XYZ company,they can go look/investigate

If he ever receives social security disability, then my kids will receive disability support through ssdi (at a rate of about 50% of what he gets) so child support would not be necessary.
