paw swatting..

i have a 6 month old pit/american bulldog mix..she's already 70lbs..she likes to swat her paws up at you when you try to pet or kiss her or when shes super excited that we came home..i can get her to sit and stay pretty good but thats the one thing i can't stop her from doing. her claws leave that scratch that stings for a good 30 seconds. how can i get her to stop swatting her paws at us?

  • Ignore her completely til she has time to calm down.It will not hurt her "feelings".The moment you see the paw raise off the floor turn your back on her and ignore her,but when she is calm and keeps them down, prise her calmly. When we act all crazy excited they do it too, so calmness is key.good luck, good question.

  • I'd get a remote trainer, we got this for ours and it works on various problem behaviors, i.e. digging, chewing, excessive barking, and jumping. Our dog is sooo much better behaved, and until he/she learns keep those nails trimmed!!! Good luck to you!!!!

  • she needs to learn the "DOWN" command..or maybe shes just trying to tell you she doesnt like people all up in her

  • she knows her 'down' command..and shes not swatting to get people out of her face..shes the one In Our faces and shes swatting out of excitment and trying to get us to pet her more.

  • I pet sit for a pit/lab. He loves to jump and use his paws when he greats you when he arrives. If someone comes inside after he is here he tries the same thing. So with being so large it is hard to control him, so I have begun training him with treats on a down command as soon as he starts to leap, jump, and become a nut. He has a collar and I do take charge to say back off and down. As soon as he knew I had treats he didn't take but a few days to get the idea. When he arrives, his owner puts him in a sit stay command untill he is calm, and then get 's to come in. We love him very much but just needed to get some smarts taught to him. He is a good boy now.

  • The remote trainer is kind of a static shock collar, and you hold the remote and push the button when needed We use one as well.
