Gardisil for boys

Took my 11 yr old son to the dr this morning and discovered he needs a few shots to get up to date. They want to give him Gardisil. I've found plenty of info online touting the benefits of it, but I'm concerned about risks. I know it's been around a few years, but it is still relatively new. It's not that I don't want my son protected, or to add protection for girls he may one day sleep with. But I don't want to risk major health effects, either.

Does anyone know if there are any risks (other than the usual fever, injection pain, etc.) that I need to consider before giving them the go ahead?

  • My girls have/will get it (oldest is done with her series).

But my son will NOT be given the series of shots. Due to his medical and prescription history, I do not feel it is in his best interest and overall safety.

  • I am not giving gardasil to my kids (14, 12, 10, 3, and 1). It hasn't been around long enough to know the long term consequences and there have been some pretty serious incidents after receiving the shot. I would encourage you to do more research before making a decision either way.

  • missanc....that's exactly what I'm concerned about. All the other shots are ones that I know I've been given, and have been around for years, so I'm confident that there aren't likely to be any consequences. But this....it's like, i want to protect him, and any girls he's with, but I'd be devastated if I did this, and then 10 or 20 years from now, I find out it had horrible consequences for him.

And everything I find online goes on and on about the benefits, and only mentions the usual side effects that go along with getting a shot. It's driving me nuts.

  • I did not have my daughter age 15 take this shot. I just don't think it has been around long enough. I really don't understand why they have to have it so young. I do know that some children are sexually active quite young but I just don't think it is worth the risk on a child that is still developing.

  • I wouldn't have any children get this shot. In the beginning stages of this vaccine hitting the market there were many, many deaths. I don't feel there was enough testing done on this vaccine if it caused serious reactions that included death. I am against it. JMO.

  • Neither of my sons will have this. There have been way too many terrible problems reported.

  • I finally started finding some results that weren't all "this is great, do it!"

I think I'm going to skip it. I talked to my son, too, and his initial feeling right now, after I told him that there's really no way to know how this will affect him long term, is that he doesn't want to do it either. I know he's only 11, but it is his body and I felt he should have some say, even if he doesn't fully understand.
