Every summer my family goes on vacation. Two years ago we went to Disney World and last year we went to Ohio. However, this summer is going to be hard. My husband was laid off a few months ago and we had to use our savings to make sure the bills were paid. He got another job, but it is less money. I am in school full-time and trying to find something to make a little extra money from home, but havn't had much luck since I am not one to sell stuff.
I have a son who is 9 and two step-sons who are 9 as well. They always look forward to our summer trips, but we are not sure what to do this year. We just don't have the money to take any trips. We thought about doing small trips on weekends, but are still stuck because we don't have the money for hotel stays. We live in Kentucky so there isn't much to do as far as theme parks or anything like that.
Does anyone have any fun ideas that younger boys would like and are really cheap? I would like to do something that we don't normally do to give them a sense of adventure. We go fishing a lot and hike, so I was looking for something new that would be fun for them. A bunch of different ideas would be helpful since we will probably be doing a lot of small trips. Thank you!

How about National Parks/monuments. There is usually a lot of hiking and outdoors stuff to do. There are also Jr. Ranger programs and the kids can earn badges/pins for doing the program. My kids love national parks. Check out National Park Service

You could try geocaching. I have heard great things about it and since you seem to like the outdoors this might be something fun and new.

how about camping... tent camping!! We love it... my kids (dd 8 & ds 5) have been talking & planning for months already. It is pretty inexpensive to stay in camp grounds especially if you cook your own food and don't eat out all the time!! ;o)
