Vinegar AND Ammonia?

Taking some large bedding to the laundromat today.
Sleeping bags- Quilts etc.
They have a strong urine odor.
I normally just use vinegar to remove the odor and wash multiple times.
It's going to end up being $5 per load- so washing more than once isn't an option.

I have found one site that briefly discusses vinegar and ammonia.

Has anyone tried this? In a large capacity machine?
How much of each should I use?

Or if you have a better idea, that would be nice too.

  • I personally wouldn't use the ammonia.

I'd use 1/2 cup of baking soda in the wash cycle and 2 cups of white vinegar to the rinse cycle.

  • ^^Agreed. Borax is even better than baking soda.

  • No you add one to the wash and one to the rinse. So borax or baking soda in the wash cycle and then vinegar in the final rinse.

  • well if a cat or dog peed on the blankets then the ammonia smell is going to make them just pee on it again. i'd just used white vinegar. (we'll i'd throw them away but...)

  • Should I use vinegar AND borax?

It's my child's bedding and she'll be mortified if I don't figure this out and just toss the stuff.

  • That sounds like it would smell horrible. But if it works, great.
