What is socialism?

I'm asking this because I see people saying that we're turning into a socialist country. I am not a political person at all, and honestly have no understanding of what it means. Why is it a bad thing?

  • It looks good on paper but in real life it doesn't work. Just think of the concept of Robinhood. Taking from the rich to give to the poor. So someone who has worked hard at, lets say starting their own business that is now really successful, would be taxed higher so someone who decided they just never wanted to work could get that money. Really, I see it as punishment for doing well for yourself.

  • socialism is only bad because of the flaw of human nature.
the people in charge take advantage of the citizens therefore it doesn't work out in the end.
also the "rich" people start acting like children when forced to "share"

all money and goods are controlled by the government then divided among the people. There would no longer be rich or poor, everyone would be equal, it would be controlled by the government.

Read that article. I think it will explain to you why so many people are alarmed by the direction our country is headed.

Socialism is bad because it gives too much power to the government and the government is already corrupt as it is. It's also pretty much inept and can't accomplish what the private sector can accomplish on many different levels.

True socialism has never been attempted, because it's basically impossible to do. What the world has always seen instead is token attempts at it masking horribly inhumane greed and corruption. Russia is just one example of what happens when people fall for the pretty bits of socialism that sound good without actually examining what is required to get there or bothering to vet the self-appointed saviors who are about to bend them over.

No. Russia was a form of communism.

  • Socialism can never work here in America and I would never want it. We would give up a lot more freedoms as our Government got bigger and controlled our lives more than it does now. We need a smaller Government with less programs and our people need to learn to help themselves and others.  Not all socialists are communists but all communists are socialists.  Not something I want.
