Best kinds of apples for applesauce???

I am wanting to try a super simple crockpot cinnamon apple sauce this afternoon and have no clue which apples to get. Most recipes say a mixture or tart and sweet apples- but I don't know what kinds those are or which are in season/available right now!

  • Granny Smith - very tart
    Macintosh - medium sweet
    Fuji - sweet
    Gala - sweet

Apples don't come into season until fall so any apple you buy now is coming from South America or Australia. When I do baked apples in our chiminea I like to use Gala or Macintosh. I use Fuji's for apple crisp with 1 Granny Smith thrown in to cut some of the sweetness.

  • I do what robinkane does and mix the apples up to get the best of both worlds. So good with cinnamon, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt to bring the flavor out. I've never thought of using the crockpot for applesauce. Good idea.

  • A nice mixture of Romes, Fujis, Macs and a Granny Smith is good. I put up several batches a year when the apples come into season. Also make dutch apple butter. Nice gifts for Christmas.
