Tax question for unemployed mom on state aid?

I didn't work at all this last year and was also on state aid. I am the only supporter of my DD and she only has a sperm donor so I'm the only one who claims her. Do I need to file taxes? A friend told me I can still get the child tax credit or whatever even though I had no income... Is this true? We could really use the money... And I have a great job now so no bashing please...

  • I don't really have an answer for you, but I would think not if you didn't pay anything in. That doesn't seem quite fair if you did get money back.

  • I am not 100% sure about this. I am on state aid as well, but I have worked. I do know that the local DHS office should help you with a tax preparer to answer your questions. Have they sent you any letters regarding EIC and free tax advice and preperation?
