What age can a kitten leave their mother?

My kittens are 9 weeks old and as far as I know they dont nurse much anymore. They eat a lot of normal food. I just dont want to take them away from mom to soon....dont want them to end up having any behavorial problems from it.

  • No earlier than 8 weeks but 10 weeks is better. Watch them for signs that they are ready to be independent such as eating solid food on a regular basis and Beginning to explore on their own a little.

  • They are old enough now to leave mom. Many shelters separate them at about 8 weeks unless there are other medical issues.

    "behavorial problems"....OMG

Answer by meooma at 10:04 AM on Apr. 22, 2012

  • What I meant by behavioral problems was separation anxeity, etc. My sister has an adult cat that likes to suck on things like blankets and shirts....most likey because she was taken away too early.
