Getting a kitten soon---Where does a kitten sleep? Do you crate a cat at night?

I want to get a small cat bed or pillow for her but do I need to put her up at night?

Never had a cat in the house before. Just curious.....

  • You don't need to put her up at night, she needs access to her litter box and water. And cats sleep any where they darn well please, lol. If she's really little, you may want her in the room with you. The downside is they get really playful in the middle of the night and attack your feet and hair when you are sleeping. My kitties are almost one year old, we shut them out of our bedroom so they don't disturb us and they sleep out on our enclosed porch, or anywhere else they feel like it.

  • Also keep in mind that Cats are pretty much nocturnal so locking them up at night would be a disservice... they are very active at dawn and dusk. I would shut the doors to your rooms and let kitty have access to the rest of the house!

  • No crating. Kitties don't pee and poo on YOUR schedule. Just let them have the run of the house

  • I put my kitten in a bunny hutch for awhile because we live on a ranch, she is an outdoor cat, and there are LOTS of critters outside at night.

  • Mine just sleep where they want to at night. Two on one sofa, one on another sofa and one cuddled up with me. I have small blankets on the sofas and the cats really like it.

  • We have never had a cat who actually used any bed we've gotten for it and although we crate our dogs, we have never crated a cat. Our cats have free roam of the house and just sleep wherever they want...which usually ends up being on one of our beds.

  • We found our cat under our storage shed when he was just 6-8 weeks old! Since we didn't know where he came from and how long he'd been running loose (therefore we weren't sure if his mom had been able to teach him how to use a litter box), we kept him in a large dog crate for the first 2-3 nights with his litter box, water, & a towel to sleep on. After that & ever since, he has had the run of the house. Now he sleeps on our bed, his cat tree, the couch, the floor....yeah pretty much anywhere he wants. In your case, if you are getting your kitten from someone, it will not need to be crated. Just make sure it always has access to the litter box and a water source (lol, I say water source because my cat hardly drinks from a bowl...he usually licks water off the tub floor or if we leave a cup/glass of water sitting out, he'll sneak a drink from it).
