Can newborns get constipated? And if so, what causes it and how can I avoid it??

  • Yes, they can get constipated. If you are breastfeeding, it is unlikely, but if they are on formula, you may have constipation. If it happens on formula, try Nestle Goodstart with Natural Cultures. Not every baby that takes formula will get constipated though.

  • There are many causes of constipation: a narrowing at the anus can prevent the stool from coming out. The nerves that move the intestines may not work well, slowing down the passage of stool. But often a baby is constipated simply because the milk she is drinking is stopping her up. And contrary to popular belief, this can happen with breast milk just as it can with formula.

What you can do is by drinking more water and eating foods that promote bowel movements, a breast-feeding mom can change her diet to help soften the baby's stools. Sometimes a breast-feeding mom can drink prune juice to help her baby stool. Both breast- and bottle-feeding parents can also give their babies prune juice in small amounts.

  • If you're breastfeeding no poop does not mean constipation. BF babies can go days with out pooping. It's not constipation unless they have trouble passing it.

  • I am breast feeding. She seemed to be pushing last night and just seemed like she was in a lot of pain and then this morning she went three times within about an hour.

  • If the poops were loose then it doesn't sound like she's constipated. Maybe she was gassy. If they were hard she could be stopped up. Call your doc if your still worried. They're used to calls like that.

  • yes, my daughter gets constipated..the doctor told us that it was the iron in the formula, but that she also had to have it for the eye and brain development..mylycon (or generic brand: infant gas) works miracles, it breaks up air bubbles and makes it a little easier for my daughter to poop.

  • Yes my son is now 7 months and when he was a newborn he would get constipated all of the time. i gave him brown sugar water. About 2-3 oz of water and then 2-3 teaspoons of brown sugar. it always helped him eventually have a poopy diaper. HTH
