Opinions on anti virus software

I just got a new laptop. For the last 5 or so years I have used free AVG and free Spy Bot. The Best Buy I purchased this computer from said neither is good enough if I do much social networking saying Facebook is horrible for picking up "bugs" and virus's. He also told me if I do any online banking (I d0) that I should purchase the additional coverage for $49 the AVG offers. He also said PC Cillian and Norton are good. I am not very "computer smart" and was wondering if anyone could recommend or suggest what they would do? Am I okay with the free products I have always used and have not had problems?

  • I hate Norton and McAfee. I use one my dad told me about. It's called Webroot. It's about $50, and provides coverage for 3 computers. It lets me determine when it scans (I choose to have it scan every time I turn the computer on), and it quarantines anything it thinks is a virus. It even has a way that you can open those items in a safe environment to find out what they are, if you think it might be something you actually need/want. I will never use any other product again.

I did use the free ones you mention, and I never had any problems with them, but I'm also super cautious, so I can't say that it's because they were so effective.

  • To pay for it: Trend Micro (does free "housecalls" on your computer if you don't buy it)
    Free: I use Avast.

Norton is one of the worst antivirus programs. It is a type of worm (reproducing virus) in and of itself. It will dig down into your hard drive and is almost impossible to get rid of completely. I've had several friends that have had to buy new computers because of Norton. I have also had bad luck with McAfee as well. I've had it suddenly determine that a program I'd been using for years with no problem was a virus overnight and deny me access to said program.

  • I'm a Norton Girl, have been for years. I have Norton 360 Premiere Edition. I don't have to "babysit" the software, it runs pretty much on it's own. I do weekly back-ups, manually, my preference, but the backup can run on auto-pilot as well, which is a feature that comes with the Premiere Edition. It comes with PC Security, Identity Protection, Backup and PC Tuneup. I have it running on 6 computers and never had a problem. I also run Super AntiSpyware, cost $19.99 for a lifetime license, I use it primarily on my flash drives and external modem. I had McAfee once, it came installed on the computer, I personally didn't like it as well. That's probably because it caught a virus and it was an awful job trying to get things back in order. Best wishes.

  • I hate Norton. It slows down your computer and when your "lease" for their products expires, they make it damn near impossible to get rid of all of their claws from your computer. I was forever getting pop-ups that Norton was no longer active on my computer (till my computer-savvy brother got rid of it ALL). I like Avast, but AVG is also quite good. I would recommend more than just anti-virus software. I also have Spyware Blaster and SuperAntispyware. Check out geekstogo.com for a bunch of good info or recommended software. It helped me a lot when I had a nasty virus on my computer.
