The HS girl's basketball coach from Dallas....

was fired!, after allowing his team to rack up a score of 100, while their opponents had 0. What are your thoughts on this?

(I don't have a link, I just saw it on the news)

  • I don't know all the details, but I'm assuming by all the hooplah that he did NOT put in his secondary players, or quit running a full course press, etc.

I can see 50-0, but 100-0?!? Surely the other team didn't stink so bad that they couldn't score a single time against a second string team? Running up the scoreboard like that is not very classy.

High school sports are NOT all about winning. They should also teach good sportsmanship and teamwork.

  • That is being such a jerk.....part of having the responsibility of teaching young girls also includes teaching how to be a good winner and have good sportsmanship.

Maybe it will send a stern message to other coaches.

  • I think it's bogus. Yeah, it sucks that the other team didn't score at all. How exactly are they supposed to play the game? Are they supposed to give the least amount of effort so as to give the other team a sporting chance? What happened to aspiring to greatness?

  • Wouldn't it be the other coach's responsibility to forfeit?

  • fired over it is pretty silly, though i could see it being an issue if his attitude was over the top. there shouldn't be any rules about it, but the coach should certainly have some level of sportsmanship as a good example and should certainly be able to control their competative selfishness as an adult!

How exacty is he supposed to teach them how to compete?  If the other team isn't doing well, then is he supposed to make the girls 'let' the other team score a bunch, just to keep the crowd excited?  Isn't the nature of competition to do your best?  Why bother if you aren't even going to put the effort in?

  • This is the silliest thing ever. Just more of the dumbing down of America. We all have to be brought down to the lowest common denominator and that is sad. That coach did NOTHING wrong. The coach that should go is the other teams coach that put a team that was clearly not qualified into a position they shouldn't have been in!

  • My dh is a coach and in situations like this you start putting in second and third string players.
Its kind of a known thing that you dont rub the other team into the ground so bad. Like this team did. There are ways to relax the play from the winning team so as not to run the score up sooo bad.
