What odd games did you play as a kid?

It seems to me like kids today have problems using their imaginations. They NEED toys to play. I know when I was little we didn't need any toys to play.
We used to play war with socks. We play little mermaids (my brother's room was where Ursala lived). We play hot lava (can't touch the floor). We pretended to be Eskimos in the winter. We played harvest in the fall (all we needed was a wagon). We pretended that we were mice and that cars were cats and vans were dogs. We had to run away when we saw a car and hide, unless there was a van following it (because then it was too busy being chased by a "dog" to bother us). LOL
Our bikes were either horses or cars, and when they were bikes they had names.

  • DS has no need for toys for his imagination! I don't know that it is the kids, I fear it is more the parents. DS doesn't need toys to play anything. He has a greater imagination than I ever did. We played the lava game and so does DS. I know there were more games we played as kids, but at this moment I can't remember them.

  • Our bikes were horses too! Our backyard was the Labyrinth, and the old, flatbed truck parked there was the Goblin city. There was also a small dirt mount (which seemed as big as a mountain when we were kids) that was our castle. Sometimes the truck was a stage for our band. Sometimes it was a house. Our stuffed animals were our orchestra, and we were the conductors. (Mom and dad were constantly putting on music in our house.) Heck, one of my mom's favorite stories to tell is how they used to go gold mining when I was little. (like 1 or 2, before my sister was born) She said I was perfectly happy playing with rocks and sticks. Luckily, my daughter has a great imagination. Sometimes she'd rather play for hours in a box she drew on instead of with her toys. She also sits for hours in the kitchen, at the fridge, playing with her letter magnets. Not making words, mind you, but pretending they're people with elaborate stories.
