Questions about celiac disease and gluten intolerance.

I've been to the doctor twice. First time they needed a stool sample. When I went back a week later for the results she said there were no signs of infection but the lab found some antibodies that are linked to celiac disease. They took blood this time and they are sending me to a specialist. The doctor didn't say specifically that I had celiac, just that it was a possiblity. I could tell she didn't want to say much until she had more test results.

I think I mostl likely do because I have several symptoms: stomach pain/bloating , nausia, diahrrhea (for 2 months), lost 15 pounds, fatigue/weakness, irritablilty. I also don't have much of an apatite and Ive felt more depressed.

All of this just happened within the last 2-3 months. I had actually gained some weight that I planned to lose before swimsuit season got here. This isn't exactly how I planned it.

Does it sound like I have celiacs? Something else? I've also read that it can be brought on by severe emotional stress. I've been dealing with a lot of crap here lately. I got into a huge arguement with my mom that was so bad I was scraming at her. Arguements are typical but never that bad. Plus my ex husband texted me las Feb. to tell me he didn't want anything to do with our son. I've had to go to court several times for child support that he wont pay. The divorce was just final in March after going though hell just trying to get lawyers office to do their job. Could it have been brought on by all that?

  • I know you're looking for answers but jumping to conclusions and worrying won't help. Just wait till the tests come back so you can get a real picture of what it is or is not. Then you can google Celiac disease or gluten intolerance. This could be many things, that can be managed. We don't know. Don't panic and good luck.

  • It could be celiac. Those are all the 'standard" symptoms. You won't know for use until the blood work comes back. It's hard to get use to at first, but once you've done it and have found decent alternatives it's not so bad. Although the alternatives are 'never' as good as the real thing. Also if it does come back as celiac be prepare to READ labels: wheat/gluten is found in a lot of things: nearly ALL can soups (even tomato), pies, cakes, breads, brats, hot dogs. You will find wheat/gluten in candies, cereals, pasta, etc.

  • I'm trying not to get too worked up over it. I just want to be mentally prepared so I don't freak out. It seems like a real pain to weed out everything with gluten. How many resturants have gluten free menus? I had to go without dairy for 3 days to see if it was lactose intolerance. That was not easy.

  • Really...no restaurant has gluten free/celiac menus. Even if they do, for example dominoes is coming out with a gluten free pizza, a person with celiac MAY NOT be able to eat it because it was prepared and handled with the same utensils and cooked in the same ovens as the 'normal' pizzas. Seeing it's cook in the same ovens and handled with the same utensils, it would get cross containment and therefore MAY cause issue with those that have celiac. Going out means sticking to salad with some time of vinegarette or ordering steak and bake potatoes. No restaurant mash potatoes because most likely they are box potatoes and certainly no gravies because they are made with flour and flour means wheat and wheat means gluten. sometimes the other dressings have gluten in them because they have wheat.

  • blood work is not always for sure with celiac - you may also need a colonoscopy so they can take biopsies, which is the sure answer. i know a few people with it and 2 had negative blood tests and positive biopsies. either way, hope you get answers soon so you can get to feeling better!

  • I have to get the celiac test, too. The doctors from the ER told me two different diagnoses, the now I have a GI specualist, who did a colonoscopy and rverything is 'normal,' so I still have pains in my lower avdominal close to my appendix and switches to the left quadrant. I take an abtispasmatic to help with the uncomfortableneas of the IBS. I can't barely tell now what I am allergic to - i find out the next morning, unfortunately. I just found out yesterday that I am allergic to HCF. Anything made with corn syrup should be banned lol

  • Oh, by the way, stress and anxiety can increase symptoms close to celiac as well as other gastro intestinal issues. Get that next blood work done to ease up that anxiety.

  • My brother went through the same thing when we were kids...the doctor said he may have it, but they have to do more tests to confirm it. My mother took that as, he has it, so everyone else in the family has it, so then she put us all on gluten free diet, which is very hard by the way. She kinda went out of control with everything and she didn't even know if just him had it yet. We went and saw a specialist and he confirmed that he didn't have it, my mother was livid, which was her own fault because she didn't listen in the first place, but...just wait on the results, because you may not have it, and they may find something else completely different....no need to stress now about having something you may not have.
