Gatorade......

My kids have a class picnic in the park coming up in about a week and I've promised them gatorade since they're dying to try it and "all the other kids bring it every day to school so they're DEFINITELY bring it to the park!". Spending 6 hours in the sun running with their friends seems like a decent format to indulge them but when I looked at Gatorade at the store I was super confused.... what are the numbers? I don't get it. We aren't gatorade people, I used to drink it when I coached soccer but that was over 10 years ago and there were no numbers then.

What "level" do you buy for a 7 and 5 year old?

Also is there any danger in watering it down a bit?

  • I didn't know it had numbers. The only thing I know of is the zero stuff, which just has 0 calories, if I remember correctly. I don't see any issue with watering it down, that would make it sort of like Pedialyte right?

  • The numbered ones are supposed to be before (1), during (2) and after (3). I would just get the regular gatorade with no numbers and yes you can water it down if you feel the need.

  • Water it down. All that extra sugar can really screw with things, especially if they're not used to it.

  • You water down the gatorade it tastes like shit, lol and the kids won't drink it. Gatorade is a real good choice when it comes to drinking it after sports, or when its hot etc. But the numbers on it was for use with the professional sports and such, but now regular people can get access to it now.

G1.. line consists of a pre-game fuel in a gel consistency, positioned for consumption prior to athletic activity

G2..line is for while they are playing, and other sort of excerise and they can drink the products like the orginal gatorade thirst quencher

G3...line was made for after the activity is done and is supposed to formulated with protein and carbs with the intention to provide both hydration and muscle recovery.
My brother drank that stuff like it was going out of style. He played quite a bit of football, and volley ball on the beach.

  • The carbohydrates in Gatorade, well in this case, sugar, can give you more energy, and its potassium and sodium can help maintain electrolyte balance. But according to my doctor, if the workout lasts less than an hour, hydrating with plain water is a better option. My brother and I when we were growing up, we both were heavy into sports, no school or professional, but just to play, but we would be playing for hours in the FL sun and my doctor told this. He actually suggested Gatorade. But, it didn't have to be the number line. Any type of Gatorade was fine.
