My 5 year old daughter eats constantly?

She eats ALL THE TIME....i understand that kids have growth spurts and eat a lot and grow a lot or dont eat that much, sleep all the time, etc...but my daughter eats all the time, anything and everything...shes getting to be quite chunky...ive seen other kids that are way chunkier than her, but still....i need to take her to the dr to see what he says about it, but does anyone know what this might be?

  • Is it possible she's bored?

Do you limit her to three meals and two snacks or is she a child that snacks all day instead of eating bigger meals?

  • try having her drink a glass of water when she says she is hungry, like is recommended for adults trying to lose weight - sometimes being thirsty can make a person think they are hungry, and drinking a glass of water takes care of the problem.

  • Sometimes it could be due to a growing spurt. My boys did this as well then they'd stop and I'd worry they weren't eating, lol

  • My niece was on the chunkier side when she came to us in August. She was 5 1/2 and tipped the scales at 63 or 64 lbs. She was larger around than she was hips to floor. I just controlled what I gave her more so than I normally would have. I cut out ALL snacks and anything that was empty calories like juice. She got 8oz of milk in the morning and water for the rest of the day. I also made sure that 50% of her lunch and dinner plate were vegetables or fruit. I got that child down to 55lbs before she was pulled from my care after 3 1/2 mos. She came back to me 4 mos later and put on a few lbs. Again, I started controlling her meals. I make sure that they get good filling meals and if they truly NEED a snack I will give it, but I hardly ever hear "I'm hungry". It took her a few weeks to get back on board with eating larger, healthier meals in one sitting instead of junk. You need to pay attention to what she is eating..

  • cont....and when and make changes with her diet as needed. A lot of children are overweight b/c of the choices they have learned to make when picking their snacks. I know not all people are going to see the results that we had, but what we did completely worked and is still working. She has been back in our care for 7 weeks and she has gone from needing to wear a size 8 in the waist to wearing a size 6. None of this has been an unhealthy weight loss and our ped is pleased with the progress that we have made.

  • it is actually healthier for anyone to eat 5-6 smaller meals through the day, than to eat 3 big meals and no snacks - helps keep the blood sugar even, helps metabolism, and does not stretch the stomach, making a person want to eat more in one sitting, to respond to coala's reply.

  • How big is she? I would try to get her more active, so that she is too busy to say she is hungry. Make it a family thing, like walks after dinner, bike riding, trampoline, swimming, just something-everyday. Cut out empty white crap, such as white bread, pastas, rice and also juice. Switch to brown bread/pasta/rice-better for everyone anyhow, keeps you full longer. Milk- switch to 1% and kids do NOT need 3 or 4 big glasses a day like some people think, one is good( plus 2 other calcium sorces) per day. Keep a bowl of fruit on the counter, if she needs a snack, tell her to go pick out a fruit from the bowl.

  • She's growing. Of course, she's gonna eat and eat. But, if you make her feel bad about it, she may resort in emotional eating later in life.
