Do you let you child(ren) play video games during the school week?

My friend keeps telling me I'm mean since I don't let my kids play during the week. I think it's more important that they get their school work done and then have some physical exercise. I don't want my kids glued to the video games... what do you think?

  • Homework and chores MUST be done before you sit at that video game console or computer desk. If they are not, you're grounded for at least a week.

My kids like to do a balance, though. If its nice outside, they'd rather go play. If its icky, then they'd rather stay inside and play.

Its your house, but I think an hour or two on icky days wouldn't hurt? Again, as long as other responsibilities are done first.

  • I agree with you... My son is a HUGE gamer and it seems like that's all he wants to do... and he would if I let him. He hasn't been able to play his video games because he's been acting up in school and not getting things done. He got a Wii for xmas and has barely got to play it. lol I hate video games really. I told him if he ever wants to play them again, he better start behaving and doing what's asked of him not just at home, but at school too.

Yeah, I should have prefaced mine with that, as well. Chores and homework do have to be done first.

  • I played everyday when I was in school. I had good grades and was in shape. I think denying kids that make them addicted later. My husbands Mom was strict with games and now it's all he wants to do.

  • yup... in moderation. They are technology free until 6 pm... then if homework is done they can play or watch TV until bed time at 8... except while we are eating dinner. In the summer we are Tech free from 9:30 am - 7 pm unless we are camping, then they get their DSi's in the car or if it's raining.

  • Yes, limited of course. They do their homework as soon as they get home and then usually play outside for a while before supper. After we eat they usually play on the computer or wii for a little until time for showers and pjs.

  • We homeschool, so things are a bit different for us. But yes, they do get to play video games during the school week. A lot of the ones they play are educational, as well, though, so I tend to be a bit lenient with that. They don't get to play until our school day is over, and we almost always go outside to play as soon as the school day is over, so they don't generally get to play them until after dinner.

  • I don't think it's a big deal as long as they get their school work done. However, it would be something that would have to be limited to not the entire evening, but some of it...? Yeah, not a problem.
