  • What are you going to be using it for? If you or your family like to play games, you should make sure the processor will be pretty fast, and the graphics card is pretty good. Remember, you can't just upgrade a laptop like you can a desktop, so you've got to make sure you will have enough specs to handle whatever you are doing.

Second, at first find what you want. Ignore the price. On the websites for Dell and HP for example, they have an area where they help you "build" what you want. Once you have one customized to your needs, jot the specs and the product number down, and then Google them. You might find a different brand that is cheaper but with the same specs, or you might find another site with the one you want for cheaper. I would recommend checking out as well. Good luck!

  • I totally agree with mamapotter, don't just go and look at what's on sale, that might be the biggest mistake you make. Try not to buy an off brand, that just reeks of problems. Best Buy is a great place to go that people will help you.

  • The best advice I can give you is to get a Mac. We have had a Dell and Hp. and had a lot of problems with them. We have had all Mac computers for the last 3 years and have only had one problem. We called apple and they sent us a box to mail it back to them, they fixed it and then sent it back. No problem. They are easy to use and compatible with everything.

  • There are a million options these days, aren't there? What you'll need depends on what you'll be using it for, of course...and don't base your decision on price alone. Make sure the processor is fast, and that it has enough memory for what you need. If you'll be doing work on a program like excel, for instance, you'll need more memory than if you'll be using it for wandering the internet. If you'll be editing music, you'll need more than working with excel. You get the picture. As important as memory, will be hard drive space. Don't underestimate the space you'll need. A lot of programs today are very advanced, but that technology takes space, and so you'll want to keep that in mind. Last but not least, buy from a reputable company. This is a time to go brand name. Mac or PC based, you need to buy from a company that will be around to offer support!
