My 4 yr old DS is always talking about death is this normal?

My 4 yr old DS caught a glimpse of a movie that was on after he went to bed when he got up to go to the bathroom one night and now he is constantly asking about death, if things will kill him, if someone gets sick he asks if they are going to die, he told me today that he can't walk in the road because the cars will try and kill him! Is this normal? If not, what do I do to get him out of this?

Any advice would be great.

  • It's very normal.

My favorite story is about my granddaughter. We drove by a cemetery every single day for a full year. When she was between 4-5 she started noticing it and questions like you're mentioning started.

It's around this age that kids start to recognize mortality and become curious. I think you'll find it's much more disturbing to you than it is to him; to him, it's just another part of his world to be explored

  • It's very normal and very healthy for her to be curious. Best thing to do is to sit and talk to him about it. The worst thing to happen is that he has all these questions and someone near and dear to him dies suddenly and he has that on top of it.

Speaking from experience. My daughter was 5 and curious about death and talking about it all the time. My dad died in a car accident and the whole thing gave her nightmares. I wish we would have prepared her and talked to her more about it and answered her questions.

Death is a part of life.

  • It was after he went to bed, he wasn't suppose to be up. It was adult time we were watching Underworld. It isn't like I was watching it when he was awake or something.

  • Stop letting your children watch TV, especially lil' ones of the age of 3-4 years old!! Any negativity that they hear, see or sense, they will be absorbing it like a sponge as they always do. That's why you have to be so careful what you have playing in the background, or viewing for that matter.
