Kids and coffee?

My 11 year old daughter has been drinking coffee for a yerar now and usually has 2 cups in the mornings, which I don't have a problem with. She went to a sleepover at her friends this weekend and in the morning asked the mom if she could have a cup of coffee. The mom decided to lecture her on how bad coffee is for kids etc etc. How would you handle it if one of your kids friends asked for a cup of coffee when they were at your house? It's really not a major issue but just wondering?

  • I don't drink coffee (I'm in my 50's). My mom never allowed it. Since I didn't drink it I don't buy it. So even if they asked, I wouldn't have it for them. None of my kids or grandkids drink it. If I did drink it I'd probably call you and make sure it was ok since kids tend to say mom says it is ok when mom doesn't really say it's ok.

  • I wouldn't lecture her, but if the rule in my house was that no kids were to drink coffee, that would be what would happen.

Personally my youngest has been drinking coffee for a couple of years now. It's not a daily thing and it's never more than a cup, but the caffeine helps him settle down and focus. He has ADHD. He's nearly 8.

  • I've been a coffee lover all my life, and 3 out of my 4 kids have drank coffee since they were around 9 or 10. I've given my kids friends coffee if they've wanted it but in your case I think its her house her rules. But I know how I'd be if I woke up and couldn't have my coffee lol.

  • I recently posted a question about the sale of energy drinks to kids as young as 9 y/o. Sorry, I don't think kids that age need to start their caffeine addictions. They have enough natural energy already! :p

  • I would have called and asked you after I explained how bad coffee is for people in general. Just b/c I wouldn't allow my kids to have it doesn't mean that I don't drink it. I had a fit when I found out that my sister gave my niece a mocha frappe and then sent her kid to school. That poor teacher is all I can think. LOL

  • Don't get me wrong my oldest drinks coffee and my younger ds gets a cup with lots of milk now & again. But I also know not all parents are o.k. With that so unless I knew for sure the parents allowed it there would be no coffee for them.

  • I wouldn't have lectured your little one but I certainly would not have given coffee to her. Coffee for kids, as well as soda, are a no go in our house and probably will be until they are in their late teens.

  • How would you handle it if one of your kids friends asked for a cup of coffee when they were at your house?

Ask if they are allowed to have it at home. Then try to tell if they are being honest.

Curious- does the other mom take issue with tea (apr. 40-70 mg) and soda (apr. 22-55mg) or dark chocolate (apr. 5-35 mg)?

  • Well, I have to speculate a bit since my kids are not that age but I can see me allowing them a frappe pr mocha every once in a while as a treat. I do not foresee allowing them just coffee int eh mornings at 11/12. If that is indeed the case then I would say to the child that in my house coffee is a treat and that they do not drink it every morning but offer a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate. No lectures.
