A new puppy and a new kitten two days apart - we must be crazy! Question...

We got an 8 week old female black lab on Saturday and a kitten of about 9 weeks yesterday (Monday). It wasn't our plan - we had thought we'd get them about a month apart - but it just worked out that way.

Both are very sweet and we are enjoying them. I think the kitten is well on her way to being litterbox trained. When we've had cats before, it was not too difficult. The puppy, on the other hand, may take a little time. It's been 25 years since I've had a dog. We are planning to do obedience training soon.

Can anyone recommend a good product for getting the stinky smell out of the house? I am thinking we might want to wait to rent the Rug Doctor until both animals are trained. Meanwhile, though, the house is getting pretty aromatic after only a few days. Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • Clean up any messes ASAP. After you've cleaned the, use vinegar water to rinse and soak up and leftover water with a towel then sprinkle baking soda on top until it dries and vacuum it up.

  • Vinegar would be very helpful in keeping the aroma at bay.

  • It is easy to train kittens. Lock them in the bathroom with a litter box for a couple days. That is usually all it takes. Move the litter box where you want it, and show it to the kitten. The dog will take a lot more effort. Make sure you are taking the pup out after EVERY meal, nap, and play session. Make sure you reward the pup before as soon as he/she goes potty. It is usually best to keep the pup on a leash until they go potty. Then, let the dog go off-leash to play. We use Woolite and Resolve pet carpet cleaners. They have enzymes that help to neutralize the odors.

  • Thanks for all of your comments! Momofkids, I have noticed that she needs to go potty after every time she wakes up, so we are trying to do that. Your other two suggestions make perfect sense. I know that eating triggers the reflex to move the bowels, and moving around being active helps get it moving.

I also like the suggestion about how to train the kitten. We never had to do that before, but I can see how that would work well.

  • Ah, the two fur babies will go up together. We use Tuff Stuff on pet accidents.

  • Use vinegar to clean up accidents. Spray Febreze. Scoop litter once or twice a day. Take the dog out 5-10 minutes after eating. Crate train. If he doesn't do his business crate him and then take him out every 5 minutes until he goes potty. Watch for signs he has to go. Sniffing, whining circling are some signs he is looking for a spot to go. Once you see him doing that take him out ASAP.   Cats are much easier, just show them the litter box and that's it. On occasion there may be a problem with them not using the litter box but for the most part they are born to use the litter box. Dogs on the other hand take much more time and needs lots more attention.

  • Reward the dog for going potty outside by saying "good potty". Don't say good boy/girl because you want them to know the wood potty.

  • After a week and a half, the cat seems to be pretty much litter box trained. It's getting better with the dog. I think she's had only two accidents in the house today (which may not qualify as accidents, since she urinated outside but saved the BM until right after we came in). What makes it hard is that she has diarrhea, so much harder to clean up. We took a stool sample to the vet and they suspect that it will come back with giardia or coccidia, so she'll probably get some medicine. She's already had the de-worming, so it can't be that.

We didn't like the idea of crate training at first, but after cleaning up so many diarrhea messes on the rug that I've lost count, I'm seeing the logic. We bought a giant plastic portable kennel with a door, and put in a cushy mat for her with memory foam. She seems to like it. We're only putting her in there at night so far, because there's almost always someone home.

  • We're starting obedience training classes Sunday. I did put the dog in the crate because she kept biting my son while playing, and I wanted to get the message across. She's going to be big (a lab), so we have to get that under control.

Thanks for all the great ideas!
