When did/do you start open cup training?

My DS is 2 and uses a straw cup or a straw in an open cup. When do you start training with an actual open cup?

  • My oldest, around 3. We just kept drinks in the kitchen, just fill about 1 inch. My youngest never used sippy cups. They were fine. Drinks were only in the kitchen.

  • I won't start until I know she is more in control. Mine is 20 months and when she sees a cup (like the one we use in her bath) she just dumps it over. We use regular water bottles for her right now (they seem to be the least messy for her).

  • Lol my oldest is almost 6 and still avoid open cups! Joking aside both my kids were 2 when they were able to handle an open cup (but only in the kitchen!)

  • I waited until my son was about 2, maybe 2-1/2 before I started with an open cup. We went straight from sippys to open cups. I didn't want to waste money buying straw cups.

  • Straw cups are actually better than a sippy cup for mouth and language :) Sorry...early childhood speech pathology major in me :)

  • My mom started dd at their house around sixteen months- for some reason Anah refused her straw cup only there, so they resorted to open cups. Anah is eighteen months now and does fairly well with small amounts in open cups at home and there, still uses straw cup atdaycare and sometimes at home, and always when we are out and about.
