  • I don't look at any type of yoga for weight loss - although you can lose weight because (a) if you're a couch potato, it's an increase in activity from what you're used to (b) you become body aware and want to eat properly and feel good about yourself and that can only spiral upwards

I would not suggest hot yoga for a first timer unless you take a beginner class. Let me also ask you if you are talking about simply yoga in a very hot room, or if you are talking about the Original Hot Yoga also called Bikram ? I take different types of yoga in a hot room and LOVE it. I look at it like self care - it feels soooo good for me, but no, it's not for everyone. Know that you will NEED a change of clothes when you are done! Bikram yoga, however, is not one I'd recommend for beginners at all...in fact, I am not a fan of Bikram for anyone - but there are people who love Bikram immensely. more below....

  • ...continued from my reply above....Bikram is a set sequence of movements that never change - that can be a positive because you have the opportunity to become well conditioned in those particular postures....it can also become boring for some. My issue with Bikram is that there is no regard for different body types....each posture is expected to be performed in an exact manner with no regard for bone structures that are not typical, or joints that are not flexible enough...they encourage you to push past your ability and that's where injuries occur. I also don't find Bikram relaxing because the instructors talk so much, it's like a commander in the military. Bikram wants to become part of the olympics - whereas other types of yoga are anti-competitive - in this way Bikram goes against everything I believe yoga to be. Again, please know this is my experience, my opinions....I know many people who love it !

  • still continuing, lol.....if trying yoga in a hot room, tell the instructor it is your first time....get there early, go in and get a spot near the door so that if you panic, you can leave without disturbing anyone....also, if you are near the door, it gives you a little comfort I find and you might just be able to stick it out. It is honestly one of the most invigorating experiences. I hate sweating when I'm outside trying to work around the yard - it's annoying, although I love to sweat when I'm working out, and when doing yoga, it's even a completely different experience - and it feels great....I also find great progress in hot yoga because my muscles are warm and I can usually deepen into the postures more so than in a room-temperature yoga class. I'm actually pretty hooked on yoga in a hot room !

  • I do hot yoga. Right now I do a combination of Bikram and vinyasa mixed together. I used to just do Bikram. I love it! Everyone from the very experienced to first timers can do it. The beauty of yoga is that you work at YOUR level and no one will judge you. People who practice turn their focus inward.

If you have weight to lose, you will most likely lose.

I have NOT had the same experience with the above poster regarding Bikram. Maybe it was the studio.
