My son just isn't gaining weight

It seems like whenever he gains he has another growth spurt and he's back to string bean status. He's tall for his age too but he eats whatever you give him. He eats breakfast lunch and dinner with no fuss and he snacks throughout the day. The only things he won't eat are peanut butter, corn, carrots, and won't drink any other drinks besides water, apple juice or kool aid.

Any suggestions to put some weight on my son? Thanks.

  • Does he really need to gain weight? Is his doctor concerned? What frame do you and his father have? My boys are both tall and super, super skinny. But so was their father. I expressed concern to their doctor, and he said that their weight is fine, and that they will just always be this way because they inherited their father's frame, to be tall and skinny.

If he's eating, and you feel he's eating enough to be full, and his doctor isn't concerned, I wouldn't worry.

But if you do want to put weight on him, you can try Pediasure. My kids get it to help with nutrition because some days they eat better than others so I fill in on those not so filling days.

Common- at least for mine. they got chunky and then shot up. if the growth curve is within normal range, don't sweat it.

  • Some kids are this way. They eat everything in sight and could still hide behind a pencil. As long as he's on a NORMAL growth curve for HIM I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I was talking to a mom yesterday who's child was 25 pounds at 1 year old. That child then stayed at that weight until they were 2.5.

As long as your doctor is not concerned I wouldn't try to stuff more food in his mouth than what he's already eating. From what you've said, he sounds healthy.

  • just make sure he is eating good, healthy foods. you can add olive oil to a lot of foods, or coconut oil, avocados are healthy fat, other nut butters if he likes them. if the doctor is not concerned i would not be worried. my son is the same way.

  • I'm 5'9 and his dad is 6'2. I was just concerned because on the charts that we get for the percentile of weight and height, at his height he is always in the 90th percentile and he was in the weight as well until he was 3 1/2 to now. He's gone down to the 80th then to the higher 70th percentile. I just thought that he should be heavier. His dad and I were not skinny or too heavy as children and adults. My mom and her brothers were really skinny though and tall.

  • It is normal for some kids to be tall and skinny. I have one that is 25 for height and less than 5 for weight. For her she is tall and skinny. I have another one that is 90 for height and 50 for weight. She is tall and skinny for her as well. I am not worried b/c I know they are eating and growing. If my ped isn't concerned than neither am I. FYI both of mine chunk up a little before they get a little taller. My DD who is almost 4 hasn't put any weight since her 2nd birthday, but has grown a ton in height in the last several months.

  • I wouldn't worry. My kids are all much higher on the % for height than they are for weight. Their height:weight ratio actually makes them all underweight, but my pediatrician doesn't worry because they all 5 are the same as I was as a child - it's genetic, nothing to worry about. As long as he is eating a healthy diet, no worries!
