Allergic to oatmeal?

My son gets a red rash on his face when he eats it and I think it made him throw up after having it two days in a row for breakfast? Could it be the oatmeal or something else.? He has been eating the apples and cinnamon and the original Walmart brand.

  • It may not be the oats, there are a lot of ingredients in those flavored packets. It could be any of those. If something gives him a rash, don't feed it again; instead, talk to his pediatrician about allergy testing.

  • Does he have issues with other grain/wheat products? If not, it might not be the oatmeal itself, but something else in the flavored oatmeal.

  • I was allergic to oats. It could definitely be that. I was allergic to wheat too, but oats were much worse for me. I would stop the oats and see if the rash continues.

  • It could be all the other stuff in those prepackaged mixes. See if the rash goes away after you stop feeding it to him. Next try the non-prepackaged mixes.

  • The rash goes away quickly after washing his face. This is the first time he has eaten this much of it. He hasn't shown issues with pasta or bread.

  • I would HIGHLY suggest taking your child NOW to an allergist! It wasn't until my poor daughter was 3 1/2 years old and prescribed medication she ended up allergic to that her PCP at the time finally gave permission to go see another doctor other than himself. If I had known earlier, we could have helped her. She has many food allergies.

Please don't wait to get him tested!

  • I haven't noticed any other food allergies. He may be allergic to penicillan, but that is all we know at this time. I appreciate the advice and we will definately being talking to our Pediatrician about this at our next appointment.

  • Have you tried regular plain oatmeal and then mixing in some fruit? There's a lot of stuff in those little packets and I bet it's something else other than oatmeal. It's quick to cook the regular oatmeal in the microwave and then add some applesauce or other pureed fruit - if you keep the applesauce/fruit in the refrigerator it also helps cool the oatmeal when it comes out of the microwave hot.
