Reducing engorgement when you don't breastfeed?

I need to go right back on my medications so I can't breastfeed at all but I also still need to be able to function. I know about cabbage leaves which didn't seem to do much last time and doctor said not to do the whole tight bra thing.

Any more tips?

  • Take an ace wrap and get help wrapping it as tight as you can and be comfortable. The wide the wrap width the less it will bunch up. There is also a pill which helps you dry up faster. You can check into it and see if it reacts to whatever else you might be taking.

  • Nope closest thing I can get to something like that is the pill, which doesn't mix with my pills.

  • No Ace bandages unless you REALLY want to hurt... never never bind the breasts. Chop them off before you bind them; it'll cause you less pain. (Yes, that's hyperbole... but I am serious about no binding. That's really outdated advice.)

Do call the InfantRisk Hotline to doublecheck your med: (806)-352-2519 Many meds are quite safe; doctors generally don't know what is and is not safe. If I had a nickel for every time a doc incorrectly stated a med was unsafe, I'd be richer than the Forbes 500.

The "dry up" meds were removed from the market many years ago, due to the unfortunate side effect of death.

If you MUST wean, then stock up on No More Milk Tea.

  • You could see if 24 hour Sudafed is compatible with your medication, because any allergy pill will help a LITTLE to dry you up. It isn't a miracle, but it might help. I nursed for 18 months with my last baby and my supply was nuts by the time we weaned, so it helped, but unfortunately, I don't think there is any miracle to get out of dealing with the engorgement.

  • Other than cabbage leaves to relieve the pain and a sports bra, just time. And cold compresses (like a bag of peas wrapped in a towel or something for 20 minutes at a time). Do not use warm because that will encourage more milk production and cause more pain. So will pumping, unless you are freezing your milk.
