1 Bump

I'm having trouble finding recipes that fit our needs...

I need recipes that are tasty, without being "exotic" because my husband is a "ground meat and fries" guy... But I need them to be 100% from scratch, and at least 70% veggie/fruit (or have sides that can be added easily).

I am trying to get away from boxed and canned crap. I don't have an oven though, so that makes a lot of it hard. If it were up to me I would live out of the crock pot, but I don't really know what to do with it! So I usually resort to Hamburger helper and extra veggies... Which I HATE doing! I feel like I'm just pumping my kids full of poison! But that's still better than everything I was taught to cook...

So I guess what I need is easy, healthy, "normal" and unboxed... I feel like I spend ages going through sites like "recipes.com" and can't ever find ANYTHING...

  • Try tastykitchen.com. They tend to have a lot of really down to earth "normal" recipes.

But I don't always use a recipe. Sometimes I just throw things together. A couple of weeks ago, I threw together some sliced potatoes, browned burger, a couple of beef boullion cubes, milk and seasoning. It was kind of like a Hamburger Helper stroganoff, but totally homemade. A lot of the time, when I don't know what to make, I'll do that. Just pull together random ingredients, sometimes even ones that at first glance wouldn't seem to go together and find a way to put them all together.

  • Get some cooking magazines. I'm subscribed to Food Network magazine and I love it. I've heard good thing about Rachel Ray's magazine and Everyday Food by Martha Stewart. If you have cable watch Food Network and Cooking Channel for inspiration.
And as a suggestion, start introducing new tastes in your cooking. Don't underestimate your husband, he may realize he likes more "exotic" things once in a while. Introduce new tastes in familiar dishes, like making meatballs with some Indian spices or hamburgers with a Cuban taste by adding grilled ham slices and fried plantains. He may be more open to try new things than you think!

  • Salisbury steak with two veggies and potatoes

This is just junk food but my teen boys will inhale it brown low fat ground beef with diced onions , diced bell peppers and diced garlic.Add a bit of teriyaki sauce.Cook rice white or brown in beef broth.Add what ever veggies your husband likes...peas and carrots ,broccoli ,mushrooms are some of all to ground beef.Add rice to meat mix and stir.At my house with dishes like these I push the veggies by making the dish half veggie.Add teriyaki sauce to taste.

Remember Consumer Reports had a study that said plain frozen veggies have as many nutrients as the average store bought fresh veggie. They are frozen within hours of being picked.I buy several large bags of veggies each week.Broccoli ,corn ,peas ,carrots. There is nothing added to them.I buy other veggies fresh.Having veggies on hand easily prepared will help break the box habit.
