Who should I listen to - the car dealer or the owner's manual?

I bought a new car a few months ago. The dealer said I should bring it in for an oil change every 5K miles, but the owner's manual says I should do it every 7,500. Who should I listen to?

PS there's no car related category on CM so it's going in Technology.

  • YOu would be fine to go in at 5k miles even going a bit over won't hurt the car unless you drive it hard.

  • The warranty rules, and usually it will coincide with what's in the manual.

  • Alot of times dealerships have you come in more often than then necessary because they will make more money off of you. Just do what the warranty calls for. That is what will be the deciding factor on wether or not your vehicle was maintained proprly to allow you warranty benefits if necessary.

  • Follow the warranty. Congrats on the new car. What color is it?

  • Follow the warranty & DON'T go to the dealer to get the oil changed! They are a rip-off! I have a 2010 Van that I got as new & change the oil about every 3,000 miles, but that's only about 3 times a year b/c I don't drive it that much. On my last oil change I was told I should do a semi-synthetic oil. This may be the last Chrysler product I own! (not just b/c of the oil issue- there's been a few other things that I don't feel a new vehicle should have)
