I saw this in a group and wanted to know how you feel about this...

Germany’s Jewish and Muslim communities responded with outrage today to a highly controversial court ruling which stipulated that the circumcision of young boys on religious grounds caused bodily harm and infringed a child’s right to physical integrity.

The divisive verdict, delivered by an appeals court in Cologne, involved the case of a Muslim boy who became seriously ill after undergoing the procedure, and ruled that the individual rights of the child took legal precedence over the religious rights of its parents.

The judges concluded that “circumcision contravenes the interests of the child to decide later on in life about his religious beliefs” and “the fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighs the fundamental rights of the parents”.

  • I'm not sure how I feel about your question. I grew up with brothers, cousins, etc.... lots of them. I never knew that some boys were not circumcised. In fact, I've yet to see an uncircumcised penis. LOL!

However it kind of makes me think that one day someone will bitch about a baby's umbilical cord being cut off and then we will have children walking around with their placentas still attached because it infringed on their rights as a child to have it removed.

The world is a sick, messed up place.

  • I disagree. That child is the parent's responsibility and all the decisions concerning that child belong to the parents until the child is an adult.
The could go to other things such as vaccinations. You vac your kids. It is an intrusion and violates the body's integrety. It is for the child's good (to many people's way of thinking) Should this be outlawed also.

What about braces on teeth or legs? Or surgeries or even dental cleanings?

Just because it is a religios practice (and not necessarily so) and as any other "intrusion" carries risks, does not mean te parents shouldlose the right to decide how to raise their children.

  • I disagree. It is not that common for things like that to happen, and honestly not being circumcised can cause bigger medical issues in the end. I also agree with what these other fine ladies have said.
PS..my son is circumcised and it had nothing to do with religion.

  • I don't have time to read the link, but I'm wondering if the boy developed an infection because the procedure was done by someone who wasn't a medical professional using aseptic technique? That is sad for the German Muslims and Jewish people. It is more painful and more dangerous for a circumcision to be done later in life.

  • Both my boys and my husband are circumcised. No religious reasons. No problems either.

  • I don't think something like this would ever happen in the U.S. as it would be unconstitutional. I don't know much about Germany's legal system. But I disagree that the rights of the child supersede the rights of the parents with the exception of abuse and what happened to child was not abuse. There are certain risks with any procedure. My DH and 5 boys are circumcised.

  • well if you follo the logic that birth begins at conception and that on Day 1 that is a child and that child has rights then I guess this would make sense

  • With Germany's history, I have to wonder if anti-Semitism played a role in this decision.
